WE’RE NOW 2/3 DONE WITH THE YEAR, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOUR LIFE?
Weird but effective tips to rescue your year
It’s September 1st, and at the beginning of the year, I had an encyclopedia’s worth of resolutions that I knew was theoretically possible to complete, but there’s a continent between the theoretically possible and the actually realistic. Since January, I’ve wanted to hang up my tapestry in my apartment for over two years now, but I’ve officially put off that task for eight months now. I wanted to expand my community of Asian American writers over half a year, but I haven’t done it yet. At this point, I’ve gotten more used to avoiding things than to actually doing them.
It’s Sunday evening, and I’ve been a bum for the entire weekend, even though I had a whole list of things I wanted to get done. Among other things, I wanted to write a blog post, reach out to some impressive people and ask to get coffee, and honestly just be able to see the floor of my room again. But I feel so self-loathing and embarrassed that I wasted most of the weekend already, and having an unfucked Sunday evening where I at least complete a non-zero fraction of my list just doesn’t feel like enough, so I might as well avoid thinking about the list and watch my current favorite anime instead…
If you relate to these semi-exaggerated paragraphs so far, thank you for not making me feel alone! And I’m sorry to report that you may have non-zero executive dysfunction and avoidant tendencies. It can be extremely difficult to work with. I’ve been working with this for the past few months and gotten some extreme results, and wanted to share some weird but effective tips with you for getting out of self-induced ruts.
